Rio Ferdinand has proposed that Chelsea will be more happy with playing against Real Madrid in the Champions League semis Liverpool will have the Spanish goliaths at Anfield and will want to topple their 3-1 first leg rout – Chelsea recorded a 2-1 total win over FC Porto to book a spot in the opposition’s semi finals – Man City will likewise be in dispute to confront Paris Saint-Germain in the semis if the English club go past Dortmund.
Chelsea made it through to the last four of the Champions League in a long while following their 2-1 aggregate win over FC Porto. The Blues will now face the winner between Real Madrid and Liverpool which will be decided at Anfield on Wednesday, April 14, 2021.
And Man United legend Rio Ferdinand believes the west London club will be avoiding to clash with a fellow Premier League rival.
The Man United legend claimed that playing against an English side in Europe will bring added pressure.
Ferdinand was quoted by BT Sport:
“We played against Chelsea and the pressure is just different – it’s amped up and you’re playing against people you know.
“When you’re playing against Barcelona and you go away, you’re not reminded of it.
“When you lose to an English team, anywhere you walk, anywhere you go on tv, it’s there in your face. “When you play against a European team, it feels like a European tie.”
Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole also supported Ferdinand’s point about playing a familiar English foe:
“I still believe that Real Madrid is better option in the semi-final than Liverpool.
“I hated playing against an English team.”
The Blues hold a 2-0 advantage over the Portuguese side in the first leg with goals coming from the boots of Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell. Ahead of the second leg tie, Tuchel revealed the players he would rely on to protect the team as he praised his squad’s spirit.
